Half moon arched window
by June
(Kennesaw, GA)
I have an upstairs hallway window with a half moon arch window above it. It seems years ago I used to see these type of coverings available quite reasonably but have not in recent years.
Any suggestions? I am not going to cover the lower portion of the window, it's the top that the sun is pouring through.
I live in a suburb of Atlanta. Thanks so much for any and all suggestions.
Hi June
This company will make them for you. I am looking into this and am going to do an article on this subject soon.

Ideas for covering a half moon transom window
by Martha
(Franklin, TN)
I have large double windows with a half moon transom - this is a bedroom that gets the afternoon sun. The windows have blinds but nothing covers the transom. Is there a "fix" that is not too expensive? Thanks in advance for your response.
Hi Martha
The most cost effective way is to fit a pleating arch shade. These come in one size and are very easy to trim to fit. Just click on the link below to take a look them.

I have a moon shaped windsow that I don't know what to do with!
by Amie D.
(Kingsville, ON, Canada)
Hello there!
We built a house three years ago and the moon shaped window idea seemed like a nice one....until we moved in.
Now this moon shaped window is making me crazy! It allows too much light coming through making the house a steam bath in summer. Right now I have a large bamboo pole with tabbed curtains only on the lower part of the window. The window looks like a square with the half moon on top.
So the bamboo rod is where the square part of the window starts and the half moon is naked. My problem is I love bamboo and natural things. I'd go for bamboo blinds but obviously can't get them to fit. I do not like the fan typed coverings some homes in the neighbourhood have opted for and am looking for something more fun and dramatic looking.
The other problem is the entire front room, dining room and kitchen are all open concept with the front landing and all have the same window treatments now so I can't go too different. I"d like to incorporate the bamboo somehow. I can always email a picture if this is too confusing... Any ideas?
Hi Amy
I have had a look around and have not come up with a bamboo solution either. You al most certainly are going to have to go with the pleated arch shades.
The other alternative is to make a sunburst sheer curtain to cover the window. This will require a little sewing.
Take a look at this site to see what t looks like.

Half moon window in Dining Room
by Mike
(Greensboro, NC)
We just finished building our house and I am a bit confused on what to do with our Dining Room. We elected to go with 2" blinds everywhere except this room.
I was thinking we should do something more formal; such as panels, curtains, etc. There are three windows with a half moon window (not sure what you call it) above the middle window. If we go with a rod all the way across it will be cutting through this window about 4" from the bottom or a third of the way up the half moon window. I think this will look funny.
I also don't think we should go all the way up with curtains, covering it. That too would look funny. I was wondering what your thoughts were or how people deal with this style window set. If all else fails we will just put a three-in-one set of blinds like the other rooms.
Thanks in advance for your time.
Mike
Hi Mike
Tricky one you have there, so I would go with the same blinds you have everywhere else in your house. Then to give some warmth and style I would add dress curtains to each side window. I would hang them from decorative rods that are only wide enough to support the curtains (about 2 or 3ft).
I would fix them 5 or 6 inches over the side windows. Having them only on the sides solves the problem of where the rod would cross over the half moon window.

This will give you the fabric on the windows look you want. The blinds will give you the privacy light block you need.

Semi Circle Cornice Board for Arched Windows
by Terry Tucker
(Dearborn Heights, Michigan USA)
I am looking to make or buy a cornice board (semi circle)for two 12' arched windows in my family room. Can you help me find the wood product or the company that makes cornice boards?
Is it possible to use foam padding, and if so, how do you hang the foam padded cornice boards? Usually, you use "L" brackets to mount a square or rectangle window cornice board.
What do you do for a semi-circle? Or maybe I can purchase hardware that could be mounted above the windows. I live in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.....Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance.

Hi Terry
Take a look at this site they have instruction on the best materials to use for making arched window cornice.

This link will take you to their main site with contact details.
Quality cornices
If you contact them they may make them for you as well.
In answer to your question about using foam. That is fine to use. I personally use fiber wadding off a large roll.
About brackets to fix it with. You can use the same brackets as you have been. You will need to fit one top center if possible then one each side at an angle following the shape of the arch.
Good luck with your project.
