How to hang your bay swags !

Bay swags come in all shapes, sizes and styles. Most curtain makers work from templates and pick the closest size to what you need. Generally they come in about 10 different widths and usually 2 different drop sizes. A few curtain makers will custom make your swags, but at a premium.

Swag Templates ?

I have found that the template swags come in enough size combination's to suit nearly all situations.

I have always fitted my swags and tails from a "Top board" click on this link if unsure.

Don't get hung up on the "Exact way to hang your swags. Just do what you think is right for you. I have added a few pictures on this page of swags that I have hung over the years just give you a few ideas. Just one word of advice. If fitting in a bay DON'T try and overlap your swags on the bends. It just pulls them out of shape and they just won't hang right.

The bay swags can be attached in 3 ways.

  • Velcro
  • Staples
  • Drawing Pins

The velcro method I don't like it's a bit bulky and the swags don't lie well.

The staples method great way to fix, able to flatten down swags really well.

The drawing pins method I use these when there is no room to fit staple gun over the board.

How do the swags fit together ?

The first way is side by side "Butting together" just meeting. Usually with some kind of small decoration to cover the join. The "Top Image" on this site has the 2 center swags butting together. Then covered with a "Jabot" (like a small tie) then pined on top a "Maltese cross".

I cut these swags out and pinned them into shape then the machinist sewed them together with the bullion fringing. Then I went to my customers home and hung and dressed them.

The second way to hang your swags is to overlap them. usually by about 20 to
30% again as the outer swags in the "Top Image" on this site.

The Tails what about them ?

The general rule of thumb for your tails is that they sit over the last swag both endsand go round the corner back to the wall. Overlapping the last swag by 10 to 30 %.
