Great bay window treatments made easy!
Most people worry about fitting bay window treatments, but no need . Mostly it's the curtain hardware that
is different. The curtains and top treatments are usualy made the same as for straight windows.
The exception being for fabric covered Pelmet/cornices. They obviously have to bend in just the right
places to fit the shape of the bay. Not to worry though I have an article all about fitting pelmet/cornices on a bay window .
Bay window treatments are beautiful but.....
You will have to get curtains made to fit your bay windows. Unless you hang ready made curtains, and you
don't mind them looking like a complete "dogs dinner". So what's the problem, well since you asked I'll tell you.
Ready made curtains are not made wide enough to fit most bay windows. Even fairly small bays are around 10ft wide.
As a rule of thumb your curtains ungathered straight out of the bag should be at least twice the width of
your window. So on a 10 ft window your pair of curtains should measure 20ft wide. Most ready mades are only made up to 100 inches wide.
Meaning that we are still 20 inches too narrow on each of our pair of ready made curtains.
The answer to the promlem is......
That's simple have them made (I can hear you groaning). It does not have to cost a
fortune as always it's how you go about it. Curtain makers usually charge by the width of fabric. So on the bay
as we are discussing you would need 5 widths of fabric at 54 inches wide off the roll. So it would be the
width charge X 5 = Total making cost. The length of your curtains won't affect the make up price.
The charge remains the same for most curtain makers regardless of how short or how long.
The only exception is for super long curtains. They will probably add a little more.
You then need to account for your curtain fabric and lining fabric. If you have them lined, and I recommend you
do it makes the curtain hang better and protects them from the sun for longer. The curtains makers will
charge a little more per width for making lined curtains than unlined curtains. It's well worth spending a
little more and getting your curtain made properly. The extra making cost and the cost of the lining fabric
is not that much.
So on our example bay window treatment we have 5 widths of fabric. Then for this example we will go with
floor length curtains at 8ft long. so we have 96 inches (8 ft) X 5 widths = 480 inches (12.3 yards)
Cost in U.S. Dollors
Curtain fabric 13 yards X $ 5.00 = $ 65.00
Lining fabric 12.3 yards X $1.90 = $ 23.30
make up charge 5 widths at = $ 75.00
Total cost for made to measure lined curtains = $ 163.30
Cost in U.K. Pounds
Curtain fabric 13 yards X £ 3.50 = £ 45.50
Lining fabric 12.3 yards X £ .99 = £ 12.17
Make up charge 5 widths at = £ 60.00
Total cost for made to measure lined curtains = £ 117.67
So as you can see it does not cost a fortune to have bay window treatments made to fit your windows exactly.
This is for example purposes the cost of making may go up or down a little and the fabric you choose could
cost more or less. The good thing is the making charge stays the same regardless of fabric cost.

Square Bay
Swags In A Bay
Square bay window treatments are not as difficult to fit as you may think. This one is all hung of 3 timber boards fixed with wall brackets. The valance is a simple box pleat and the curtains are on a pencil pleat header tape.
as above this bay window treatment is hung from 3 timber boards fixed with wall brackets. Very simple to fit and the swags are fixed to the boards using simple drawing pins. Curtains are again on pencil pleat header tape.e curtains to each side.
Curved Bay
Box Pleat Valance
This is a bit more time consuming to fit. This treatment is all hung of custom cut plywood top boards. The edge of the boards that touch the wall are curved to follow the shape of the bay. Then the front edges of the top boards are cut to give 3 angles sides. From which it make it possible to hang swags.
One of my personal favourites to make and fit a bay pelmet. They can also suit most rooms. Just cover with a modern fabric for a contemporary look. Or cover with a traditional fabric for a more cosy look.top board.
Shaped bay pelmet
Swags with Roman
This may look fairly complicated to make and fit yourself. It really is only a little more complicated than a straight edged pelmet. Click here on shaped bay pelmets.
This was one of the widest bay window treatments that I have ever fitted. The curtains are only to dress the window. Behind the swags are working roman shades that are used on a daily basis to cover the window. Again this window was fairly simple to put together, just a lot bigger.Take a look at Large bay window
