Canopy bed curtains..Why not make your own ?

You can make great looking canopy bed curtains for very little money. I did the one below for my little girls room. It cost under £ 30 ($ 60) and took 30 minutes to fit and hang ! The great thing about it was... NO SEWING ! Take a look just below to see the finished thing.

Why don't you have a go it's so simple almost anyone could do it.

Take a look at the pictures and instructions below on how to make your own canopy bed curtains.

Sheer canopy bed curtains

The picture to the left shows the finished canopy bed curtains. Just follow the simple steps below to create your own in no time at all.

Things you need ?

The only things you will need are 3 ready made sheer panels. One metal curtain rod with finial (fancy rod end). Also one large metal shelf bracket.

Getting Started

First step is to fix your large shelf bracket to the wall between 5 and 7 foot from the floor to suit yourself. I placed the bracket against the wall at my chosen height. Then marked through the screw holes with a pencil. Next I drilled the the holes I had marked and pushed standard red wall plugs into the holes. Then screwed the bracket into place.

The next step is to use a metal pole with a finial on the end. I secured this to the bracket by wrapping strong fabric tape around the bracket and the pole.

Don't worry about the way it looks you won't see it when your finished.

the sheers I used here were bought from Ikea. they are usually sold in single panels which is good as we want three panels to do this project.

Hanging your sheers

They have a slot top pocket allowing you to thread the curtain on to the rod. They also have tabs on the back of the curtain that we will use as well.

The first step is to take the first panel and thread this onto the rod using the rod pocket (don't use the tabs).

Next step is to thread on the next two curtains using the tabs. Start with the first tab on the first curtain then first tab on the second curtain. Then the second tab on the first curtain then the second tab on the second curtain. Repeat this for all the tabs until finished. Then attach the finial on the end of the pole using the holding screw. This serves two purposes. firstly it stops the tabs falling of the end of the pole and second it looks decorative.

Then finally fix your matching hold back arms in place. These allow you to drape the canopy bed curtains into a nice swoop. You don't have to use matching hold back arms as I have done. You could use tie backs, there are some lovely ones with beads or crystals on wires. These can be very inexpensive.

The cheapest way to drape your sheer curtains is to simply use the head board on the bed.

I hope you like these and try them for your self finally a quick picture just above of the window in the same room. Here we have used the same matching hardware and curtains.

Another canopy bed curtain example

I have recently done this canopy bed curtain for a customer. This is a little more advanced, but is still something you could do with a little sewing skill.

It Was simply a hemmed panel with Velcro tape (hook & loop tape) sewn on each corner. I stapled the other side of the tape onto the top of the wooden canopy frame. Then simply pushed the Velcro tapes together on each corner. This created the tented ceiling look.

The next thing I did was staple a strip of Velcro tape across the top at the foot of the bed. This I used to hang the curtains on the end. The curtains had what is called Velcro friendly pleating tape sewn on to the curtains. You gather the curtain tape just the same way as normal.

The difference is it has no pockets for hooks it has rows of soft threads that stick to the hard Velcro tape. So when gathered simply hold the curtain up to the Velcro tape and dab on. It sticks like magic. You can pull the curtain on and off as much as you like.

In this picture the curtains are tied back using custom made bow style tie backs. They wrap around the posts and connect at the back with little Velcro tab fasteners.
