Cornice Board over Light

by Loraine
(Nebraska)

How do I construct a cornice board for over a full-length-of-window fluorescent light? I know it has to be open on the top and the bottom, probably made with a 12" wide front board and 6"x12" side boards. Are there L brackets or wooden triangles to keep the cornice sturdy? Where would those be located? What kind of brackets are used to attach the cornice to the wall?

Hi Lorraine

Just make your cornice exactly as per the instructions on the page Make pelmets we call them pelmets in the UK. Same thing different name.

The only thing you need to do differently is don't use a top board as on this page. you need to use 2 inch by 1 inch wooden battens.

Fix these battens to the ceiling by screwing through the 2 inch side. Fix them where you need the cornice to sit.

Obviously you will have one long batten across the window just in front of your light fitting. Then make and fit 2 small battens to create the returns for your cornice.

Staple Velcro tape on the 3 outside edges of the battens. This will stick to the opposite velcro tape on the back of your cornice.

I hope that was not totally confusing if so please let me know by making a comment on the end of this page.

Best Regards

Lee
