What kind of curtain fabric do
you want ?

Easy guide to all kinds of curtain fabrics and curtain linings. Find out the pros and cons of each curtain fabric Learn how to keep your room warm in winter and cool in summer.Want your room to be dark ?. Then check this out to find the best and most practical solutions.

Cotton sateen

a smooth cotton fabric with a soft sheen. Very good draping qualities. It comes in plain colors and printed designs.

Silk

A soft rich looking natural fabric, usually with natural slubs in the weave. Mostly good to drape. Only drawback is it can crease easily. It comes mostly in plain colors, occasionally with printed designs.

I strongly reccomend you interline (woolen type lining, that hangs between the face fabric and the lining fabric) your silk curtains. This gives the curtains "body" making them look rich and plump. If you use an interlining this will give a light silk curtain good thermal qualities.

Chenille

A cotton weave fabric with a textured pile effect. Again usually a good fabric to drape. Makes a heavy curtain. It comes in plain and printed designs. Sometimes chenille can be woven with other fabrics to give a 3D effect. Chenille fabric has good thermal qualities, especially good on drafty windows.

Velvet

A cotton pile fabric it has a base cloth which has pile woven into it like a carpet. Usually comes in plain colors, very occasionally with a printed design. Again velvet fabric has good thermal qualities.there are two ways of making velvet curtains.

First with the pile down to the touch. this gives a silky sheen to the fabric.

The second is with the pile up to the touch. this gives less of a sheen, but hides any flaws in the weave which is common in velvets.

CURTAIN LININGS

There are several kinds of linings all doing different things. Some sites offer all these linings when buying curtains online.

Polyester and polycotton linings

, usually the cheapest. They come in several colors, the most popular being cream and Ivory. This is your basic lining.

Cotton sateen linings

, Usually around 50 to 75% more. Again they come in several colors. the most popular being cream and Ivory. These are good regular linings. Click on the image to open a new window. Crease resistant linings

as the name suggests don't crease as easily. This is something to consider if your curtains are to be tied back regularly.

Thermal Linings

, yes you've guessed it. They keep the heat in the room in winter. Then the heat out in the summer.

Blackout Linings

, your really getting the hang of this now. You're right stops any light passing through the curtains. Light still leaks round the edges.

Interlinings

a thin blanket type lining that hangs in between the curtain fabric on the front and the regular lining on the back. Certain fabrics work very well with Interlining.

Colored linings

every color under the sun and more. Sometimes you may want a contrasting lining because it's going to be seen. The only drawback is that on a sunny window they can fade quickly.
