Fiona

Hi What do you recommend for a dormer window?

Hi Fiona

There are a couple of curtain ideas for a dormer window. The first is a roman blind assuming there are a few inches over the window for the roman to sit.

If not Then curtains fitted to swing rod curtain arms are another good option. Just choose light fabric so the arms don't droop down with the weight over time.

Very wide window

Gina

I live in a house that was built in 1964. I don't know how to decorate my front window it is 120inches in length but its split up as follows. two small windows on each end measuring about 24inches each and then the middle window (all three connected.)the window seems never ending. what curtain style would you suggest.

Hi Gina

Firstly the curtain ideas you dress your window with will be determined by your room decor. Is it modern or more traditional, If modern then 3 roman shades. One large one and 2 smaller ones allowing you to raise or lower then individually. Possibly adding sheer curtains floor length to the sides to soften the look.

If more traditional how about curtains ideas with an upholstered pelmet. You could set the pelmet higher over your window to give the illusion of height (make the window look squarer). Maybe add a shape to the bottom edge of the pelmet.

I hope these suggestions help a little. It is often down to your own personal taste. If not sure just keep looking on the web. One suggestion is to do a google image search for "wide window treatments" or "curtain ideas for wide windows"

Small windows

Lynne

I live in a ranch that has very small windows. They are only about 30-35" long. I also have low ceilings. But I don't like the idea of having curtains hanging from above the actual window to give it length. Any ideas? I also have small rooms so I need to lighten them up as much as possible but still want privacy. I don't like drapes or blinds and I want something unique and current.

Hi Lynne

Sorry I took longer than usual to reply to your question. I had to think a little harder about this one than usual. With you saying no to curtain ideas and blinds, but wanting something current.I was a little stumped but after thinking about it for a while I have a suggestion which could be the answer.

Shutters...before you discount the idea take a look at this site

for some information an all kinds. They are very in at the moment and come in all sorts of styles. This is not my area of expertise so I won't offer an opinion as to which is best for you.

Happy hunting.

Double windows ?

Kathleen

Hi, I have two double windows in my family room. One double window then a fire place and then the other double window. How do i hang my curtains do i treat them as 4 windows or two large windows? Each double window has no space inbetween. than you , kathleen

Hi Kathleen

I would treat each double window as a single wide window. Celebrate the fact that you have wide windows. Don't try and disguise them. Long floor length curtains look best on wide windows. Maybe add a valance or pelmet over your windows to give the illusion of a squarer window.

Simple window Treatment

Sonnie

My bedroom has Cape Cottage style wooden windows (fake sash). I want to keep the window dressings simple and neutral. Windows have nice view and privacy is not a big problem. What can you suggest please.

Hi Sonnie

My preference would be for roman shades made with sheer fabric. They are a simple window treatment that if made in a neutral color will not shout out. If that's a little too plain you could add a beaded trim along the bottom edge to add a little interest.

Hanging loose linings

Wide ledge under my Window !

Shari

My double window in the family room has a ledge right underneath the bottom of the window. The ledge is in the middle of the wall and runs the length of the room. Not sure what type of curtain to use. Can I still use a curtain that hangs to the floor, even though the ledge sticks outapproximately 5 inches? Do I just use a shade to the bottom of thewindow which would lay right on top of the ledge? Do I add a valance?Do I use a curtain just the lenght of the window? Any suggestionswould be great!

Hi Shari

I think the simplest curtain ideas are to fit a roman shade over the window coming down to the ledge.

I'm sure you would like to do something a little more interesting like long curtains. This is possible but only practical if you don't enter the room side on to the window.

The way I would fit long curtains is to put a 7 or 8 inch wide board over the window set up about 6 inches, mount it on large shelf brackets one each end so they will be hidden by your curtains. Then 1 small bracket in the center.

Then I would fit a curtain track under the board but set it only a couple of inches back from the front edge of the board. This would make your curtains hang straight down, rather than sloping out over the ledge. This should look good from most places in the room. The only exception would be if you are seeing the window end on.

Then to the top board not an attractive feature. So Fit a valance or pelmet on the front and ends of the board. If the valance or pelmet (I have a page on making Pelmets take a look).have velcro friendly tape then great. Just staple the opposite tape to the edge of the top top board. If you have a gathered valance with standard curtain tape then gather it up then staple the valance up directly to the edge of the board. Staple between the pleats then tease them together to hide the staples.

Should I shorten my curtains ?

Michelle
I have moved house and have a pair of good quality curtains that would really suit a room in my new place. Only problem they are to long by about 10cm. I have no room to move the rod up either Should I get them shortened.

Hi Michelle
If I were you I would not shorten your curtains. a couple of good curtain ideas are to just hang them as usual, then fit some tie back hooks at waist height. Then drape your curtains into some rope tassel tie backs. Really scoop them up into the tie backs. Most of your curtain will lift off the floor, this look is very in at the moment. You could always fit a cheap plain roller blind behind for privacy and leave the curtains dressed back.

I hope the above curtain ideas help you if not just ask me a question below.

Again I promise not to use your details you give below for any purpose. Other than replying to your question. I will answer your question usually within 48 hours.

If you do not hear from me after a couple of day's don't be shy give me nudge and say "get a move on I can't wait all my life" or something similar, but be gentle I get very tired hanging all these curtains.
