Easy to follow guide on fitting a very wide curtain track

How to fit a very long curtain track

Tom

I want to hang eight four-foot curtain panels across the back of a stage, with the ability to move them all to either one side or the other of the 55-foot expanse if necessary. I suppose that a track system is what I need, but hanging the track from the cathedral ceiling is impossible, so at least fifteen wall brackets will be needed to support it along the wall. I have had no luck in finding such brackets. If the slit along the track could be on the side rather than on the bottom, I might try just screwing into the wall, but stability requires that two rollers run along the track, one on each side of the opening, so the wall would be perpendicular to the slit. Do you know of any brackets to solve this problem? Is there some other engineering approach to the hanging of drapes across so vast an expanse without impeding their movement?

Hi Tom

You have a fair old challenge there. I'm going to assume you have your tracking sorted out for the moment. If that's not the case let me know and I will see if I can help.

You are far better with a metal track with the glider groove in the bottom. Also I would seriously use a track that uses roller gliders. Another thing you need to consider is the length of curtain track. Most commercial suppliers only have track lengths up to 6 meters (about 19.5 feet).

Most commercial track suppliers have joiners that allow you to butt up 2 lengths of tracking. Not a perfect solution, you need to make sure the roller gliders will pass this join without major snagging.

Now I'm not sure if each of your 8 panels has to slide along its own track. Allowing 4 panels to sit 1 in front of the other when pushed to either side. This is not a problem, if so just adjust the following measurement guides.

Right to the fitting and hanging problem. The answer is to use a top board sat on wall brackets ("L" shape shelf brackets). The more tracks the deeper the board needs to be and the bigger the wall brackets needs to be. You are building and fitting what is basically a very wide shelf. Which you will fix your tracking on the underside of this shelf.

This curtain track system allows you to use some substantial wall brackets spaced evenly and the top board means you can fix your track wherever you want along the underside of the top board.

I have sketched a quick end on view of the tracking system just to give you a visual. I hope it helps.

The lengths of timber you use will be determined by the length of the vehicle that transports them and by ease of access to the stage area. Very long lengths don't bend round corners very well. As I have found out a few times.

If you are only fitting 1 track then a 3 or 4 inch deep board 1 inch thick will do the job. For every other track add another 3 inches. So if 4 tracks are required then a board about 12 inches deep or 2 X 6 inch boards side by side.

Again Tom best wishes and good luck with your project.
