Curtains and Plantation Shutters - Can it work???

by Susan
(Henderson Nevada)

Can I somehow put swag curtains around my plantation shutters? I want to add softness to the shutter look. They are beautiful, but I am looking to spice it up a notch.

Is this overkill, or is there a way to have this look really nice?

I do recognize that they will have to be just for effect, as you still have to open and close the shutters, even though we hardly do that. We mostly just adjust the slots.

Please advise,

Susan

Hi Susan

I think you will have a problem putting swag curtains over your plantation shutters. That is if they cover the whole window top to bottom. Usually swags sit over the window then fall someway into the glass area. So would interfere with the shutters.

Some plantation shutters only cover the bottom half of the window. This kind would be OK.

If you have full window shutters then the swags would obviously interfere with them opening. If you could live with this on the odd occasion that you do open then fine.

The only other option would be to have a decorative rod over your shutters then hang dress curtains to each side. I know it does not sound as jazzy as swags but is the only practical solution.

So you have swags look great but will interfere when shutters open on odd occasion.

Then decorative rod and dress curtains not so exciting but a lot more practical.

Sorry to not be of more help.

Best regards

Lee

P.S. If anyone else has a better solution for Susan that please feel free to post a comment.

Window treatments for plantation shutters
by: Anonymous

Hi,

I did this in my bedrooms where I had plantation shutters installed years ago...In one bedroom I added an inside mount tension rod and sewed some curtains that can only be seen when the shutters are open...nearly the same idea in the other bedroom except I made my own pull down shades from those inexpensive vinyl shade kits. I removed the vinyl but saved the top mount and bottom dowel and used my own fabric for a fun look which can be seen when you open the shutters. I hope this gives you some ideas. Good Luck!

I think the best answer I could personally give would be to put a 4 inch wide shelf pelmet above your shutters the width of your window plus 2 inches either side and staple your fabric along the top Put a large medallion holdback (a bit like a big doorknob ) either side slightly lower than your pelmet shelf and drape your fabric over these and let them fall either side of your shutters in natural folds. The middle section should then be teased out like a swag. Very effective and some tasseling edged along the bottom would look even more elegant.

Hi Belinda

Why didn't I think of that, what a great idea.

Thanks for your input :-)
