I have a large room with 2 sets of french doors next to fireplace and 2 windows on opposite wall - Can I use different window treatments on windows than on French doors?

Yes you can mix window treatment styles. In your case I would say curtains on decorative curtain rods on the french doors. then roman shades on the other windows. This is just one of several possible options.

Just keep the fabrics the same. Having said you can mix window treatment styles you have to be a bit cautious. I would not for instance put curtains with a swag top treatment on the french doors. Then fit curtains with a cornice on the other windows.

So you can go curtains and shades in the same fabric. But don't put curtains on both windows. then fit different top treatments.

I hope that all makes some sense to you. So the rule of thumb is:

Don't mix fabrics.

Don't mix top treatments.

Then you can:

Mix curtains and shades in the same fabrics.

You can have curtains on one side of the room and
just scarf swags over the windows on the other side of the room. So long as they are the same fabric again.

I'm sure it's all as clear as mud now :-)

Thank you for your comments. When you say do not mix fabrics. I was thinking of a coordinating plaid panels on the windows with the plain lined lichen color silk panels on the french door. Still no coordinating fabric?

If the dominant back ground color in your plaid curtains is the same as your plain fabric curtains. Then it could possibly work.

It's a difficuly one to say for sure without seeing. What I can say is I have seen designers take some stuff curtains and furniture. That I would have never thought would go together. Then when finished it looks really fantastic.

So to sum it all up it's as much as art as a science. I would invite a few ladies to take a look over your choices. They often have a better eye for color than us men.
