Help with re-threading blinds Instructions unclear

by MJ Stevens
(Paradise, USA)

Hi, I came across your website after many hours of trying to figure out what to do, not to mention an hour on the phone with my best friend!

I bought matchstick blinds and they have the valance attached. When I opened the packages the pulls (strings) had one not attached and one attached and threaded into the pulley.

I love the blinds as they go with our tropical them room and home. I do NOT love the frustration of trying to understand the instructions. The blinds are Radiance by Lewis Hyman. I have read the sheets and tried to follow along but not working.

The instructions for this are rather confusing since it goes on the premise that both strings/pulls are already attached. It says to make sure they are underneath the blinds before hanging.

I can not do that without properly threading the second string/pull. I tried too many times to count and am exhausted :(

If your assistance gets me going so I can hang these I will bow down with gratitude:) I have no children in the home or that visit so I do not need the safety lock.

Many thanks in Advance!

Hi MJ

I think you have the roll up style of blinds. If not let me know by posting a comment at the end.

I have written some instructions below this video that shows how to fit and operate this kind of blind. I also talk about how the cords fit on the blind.

If your looking for some Bamboo roll up blinds then take a look at these on ebay.

The one cord that is attached and threaded should be fixed on the back at the top. You need to attach the other cord in the same place at the top. That is at the top of your blind but on the opposite side to the one that is there already.

So now you should have two cords fixed on the back of your blind at the top. probably a few inches in from each side.

Now with your blind rolled up, both the cords need to follow from the back under the roll and up the front of the blind. They should follow up the blind in the same place they came down the back of the blind.

Now you need to lift the little valance up on the top of your blind. Underneath there should be either 2 eyelets or pulley wheels. You need to make sure both the cords are thread through these.

I think your blind is probably right control. So when finished your cords should fall down to the right. So looking at the front of your blind. The left hand cord should go through the eyelet or pulley from the left to the right.

The same left cord should then travel across the top of the blind to the right eyelet or pulley. Then thread through this from the left to the right.

Now your right blind cord should be coming from the back of the blind around the roll and up the front of the blind.

This then threads through the right eyelet or pulley from the left to the right. Your almost there now.

Finally you will probably have a cord lock mechanism on the very right under the valance. This has a a small roller inside often made of brass. This is to trap the cords to hold up your blind during the day.

This can be a little tricky to get right. Both cords need to enter the cord lock mechanism from the right side. Then turn downwards to come out the bottom of the mechanism. The cord need to fall so the brass roller is to the right of the cords when looking up into the bottom of the mechanism.

This way the lock will work properly. That's it all threaded and ready to fit. The way to make you blind lock and unlock is to pull the cords straight down to raise the blind then swing to the right and let a little tension off the cords. This will cause the cord lock to hold the blind in the up position.

Then to unlock and let the blind down. Simply pull the cords to put a little tension on then swing to the left and let the blind up wind into the down position.

So there you have it, nice and simple hey :-)

I really hope you can follow all that and get it sorted.

Best regards

Lee

No luck

Well, I have tried numerous times but nothing seems to work. I don't know what I am not understanding about this whole process. But, one piece of information I realized I did not post is this: On the right side of the BACK of the blind, there is a plastic clip holder.

Now, lift up the valance (no way to remove it, sadly) and there is a clip on each side above the pulleys. I am unclear as to how to thread the blinds and attach the strings to these clips. I also do not know HOW TO WRAP THE STRINGS! With the valance in place, I am stumped.

Lee, one more time please?
Thanks,

MJ in HI

Hi MJ

I can't be absolutely certain without seeing but will have ago.

Both your cords need to fix to the back of the blind at the top. It sounds like there should be 2 plastic clips at the top of the back of your blind. It seems one is missing, so you would need to find another way to tie the cord in place.

I don't know what the plastic clips are for under the valance. Once you have the cords tied to the back of your blind and brought down the back and up the front of your blind. You should just thread the cord through the pulley to the side where you want the cords to hang down.

So to recap you need to fix both cords to the back of your blind at the top. Either using the clip or something else. Then ignore the clips under the valance and just thread through the pulleys.

I will get around to doing a video for the site sometime early in the new year.

If you still are having problems then maybe it's time to return them to the store. After all they should be ready to hang.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you ;-)

Best regards

Hi Lee,
Nothing has worked and my frustration level is at an all time high :( Now to make matters worse one of the blinds had BOTH strings come out. I was undoing another mess-up and the string already pre-threaded came out, too! I have one more new in package blind that I am going to try. If this does not work, I guess I will send them back. I do not know if I can go through this again. I am ready to cry again over this whole fiasco.
To clear one thing up: the pre-strung pull is NOT attached to anything on the back. It goes up through the large brass pulley, from right to left. I just have to thread the other string from left to right. It sounds so simple, as even your directions indicate. However, I am unable to figure out how to "wrap" the string to get it over/under the left side of the blind then thread from the small left pulley to the large right pulley. Everything I try either has me tangling the thread in the blinds or leaves nothing "wrapped" to gather the blind on the left side. I hope this comment makes sense and you can try to resolve this issue.

Still feeling stupid/helpless/dumb :(

Lee,
If I do as you instruct how do I avoid getting the cord getting caught up in the blind itself? It is pulling on the "matchsticks".
TIA,
MJ

Lee,
Thanks! Waiting to clear the pups off the sofa and get started. Yes, the pull is to the right. This is a link to the blind I purchased.

I will get ready to plunge forth and let you know if I can succede :)

Hi MJ

Don't feel dumb it's not something you do every day. I only know because it's my job and have done it more times than I can remember.

Good luck
