How do I increase my window curtain's length.

Hi Dipannita

Lovely to hear from you I don't get many people from India asking me questions.

Now to your question about lengthening your curtains. The simple answer is it's not a simple job.

If you only need a couple of inches extra then I would let the hem down and sew a new smaller one. Either by hand or machine.

If you need a lot more then you need to add a an extra panel of fabric to your curtain. The simplest way would be to add to the bottom of your curtain. Unpick your old hem and join the new panel there and then create a new hem. This would work for unlined curtains.

If your curtains are lined then you have to either sew an extra piece on to the bottom of the lining fabric or replace all the lining. That would be my choice. You would really be remaking the whole curtain.

So as you can see it's a fairly big job. I would only do this if you love the curtains. Otherwise just get some new ones at a longer length.

Sorry I could not be more helpful.

Best regards

Lee

Lenghthen curtains?
by: Anne

I need to add ~11-12 inches to the bottom of my unlined curtain panels. I already have bought some solid fabric to add a band to the bottom of the panels. Do I really need to pick out the hem of the original panel or can I just add the band (somehow) and let it go at that? The band fabric is somewhat heavy so I was thinking about just folding down ~1 inch and sewing that to the bottom of the panel's hem and then hemming the new bottom w/ a 2 inch hem (and finishing the sides of course). What do you think?

Hi Anne

From the front is should look ok. It's just from the back it will look a bit untidy, so if that does not bother you then go for it.

Thanks..I have a similar idea. I would join an extra piece of similar color fabric and stitch a broad lace above it. I have already bought a fancy lace for it.

Hi

I think that's a great idea with the lace. Rather than a plain join.

Good luck with your project
