How high above the window do i fit the curtain rail as the ceiling is about 25cm above top of frame?

Hi Tony

The rule of thumb I use is a minimum of 5 inches over the window frame. Or in the middle of the wall between the ceiling and the window frame. With a limit of 8 inches over the window or it starts to look a little odd.

If you are hanging ready made curtains. then that will also have a effect on where you fit the curtain rail. So the curtains hang to the required length. Just try and keep the above rules in mind.

Vertical Height

How high above the window should I install verticals? I have a sliding glass door that views onto a park, and I need to use verticals for evening privacy (other options ruled out). The window is standard 75W by 82L. The room is small -- 12 x 12, so I'm not sure of the correct scale. Color will be off-white to match tile floor. Would the verticals look best fitting the window, or extend them to the ceiling height?

Ceiling height might look good closed, but the scale might be wrong for the room. Most of the time I would have them pulled back, but when they are closed and the vanes opened, it will show the 2 ft. of wall above the window. Thanks for your help --this is a great site. I enjoy reading your solutions to problems.

The rule of thumb for vertical blinds is to fit the size of your windows. Sometimes it is more practical to have them fitted a little higher but not much. I would not go wider in either case.
