How to dress windows 10 ft long?

My mom has moved in to what used to be an old school building the ceilings are high and the windows are probably 10 feet long. What can we do to the windows to keep them from looking so institutional?

A lot depends on the style you're trying to create. The only thing I would definitely do is fit a deep top treatment. You can afford to lose a little light. Maybe a fabric covered pelmet/cornice or a deep shaped valance.

You could make either of these with the sides being twice as deep as the center. Making a nice curve. Then hang curtains draped back into tie backs. In short lots of fabric on the windows will give softer look to the room.
