So you want to make curtains then you're in the right place.There are articles here for people who know nothing about sewing machines. Then we have some projects for the average sewer, simple projects that you can do in an afternoon.

You will need a few things to make curtains

Obviously you will need a few basics to make curtains. Some of these things you may have already, others you will need to get before you start. None of these things need to cost a lot. You will need some or all of these things depending which project you start. Each guide will tell you what you need.

With these simple projects below you can make curtains with either a sewing machine or by hand sewing (just takes a little longer)




A little bit more info to help you make up your mind

  • Unlined curtains the simplest way to make curtains. A simple panel of fabric hemmed on the sides and bottom. Then fold over the top and sew on your pencil pleat tape. Thats the curtain finished.



  • A bit more time consuming than unlined curtains but lined curtains are NOT complicated to make. The benefits are protecting your curtains from the sun. Also they drape better with a sewn in lining.



  • A simple valance even a beginner can make. Can be sewn or use wonder web with an iron. Once made simply gather the tape and hang.



  • Upholstered Pelmets and cornices are very contemporary. They take a bit of time to put together but are very simple. Once you get the hang you can make different shapes and trims. If you want a really quick and easy way then this Window Cornice Board Kit on Ebay is the business.



  • Scarf swags another simple to make but stylish window topper. You can hang on a rod or pole. You can also use swag holders to suspend it over your window. If you need one fast and don't have the time to make your own then these Window scarfs on Ebay are a bargain.

I have done some general design rules for different rooms in your home. Well worth a look before you leap in. Most of it boils down to basic common sense.

    Ultimately the most important rule is: If you really like it then just go for it. After all you're the one who has to look at it every day.

    Before you start to cut your curtain fabric

    You will need an area in which to make curtains. Laying out your Curtain fabric ready for measuring and cutting. If your not lucky enough to have a very large table, then the next best place is the floor. Make sure it nice and clean, wood or tiled floors are the best. Try not to use a carpeted floor as it's difficult to lay your fabric out properly and to get an accurate measurement.

    Curtain header Tape:

    Pencil pleat is best to make curtains to start with you can buy this by the meter/yard, rather than a full roll. In an ideal world you would machine sew the tape onto the top of your curtain. Don't worry if you do not have a or the experience to use one. You can hand sew the tape on to the top of your curtain.

    You will need some long to hold your seems in place before you sew. Then a selection of to sew with. Then some in various colors.

    There is a 3rd alternative that is available today. That is to use Fusible hemming tape to fix your curtain header tape. It will do for all but the heaviest curtains. Talk about make life simple.
