"I can't believe how simple these scarf swags are to make"

Make scarf swags the easy way. Follow my easy step by step guide to making and hanging and final dressing of your swag curtains.

Simple to make scarf curtain swags.A really easy top treatment, either on its own or over curtains. Maybe over a blind as well.

So what exactly is a scarf swag and how easy is it to make scarf swags. Well very simply they are a long length of Curtain fabric curtain fabric straight off a roll at around 54 inches wide. Then the unlined ones are hemmed around all for sides and that's it. Lined ones take a bit longer to make but are not much more difficult.

You have 2 ways to hang them, the first is from a decorative rod or pole. The second way is from swag holders. With these you simply thread you scarf swag through the ring on each end.

So how much fabric do I need to make scarf swags ?

Well measuring for these is very simple and you don't need to be super accurate either. Measure the width of your rod or pole. Then add on the drop ( from the rod or pole down to where you want the tails to stop). Double this for both sides. So to recap you want the width plus BOTH sides. Add together to get your total scarf swag length.

If you are going to make scarf swags (Wrap) as in the top photo then you need the length of BOTH sides again. The only difference is you will need to add one and a half times the width to your sides total. This is to allow extra fabric to wrap around the rod.

For the width of your swag, that goes for both styles simply use the full width of your fabric. Nice and easy so far hey.

Now to hem your fabric

Hem all four sides by turning over the fabric by 2cm, then turnover a further 2cm. Pin your hems all the way round your scarf swag. Then sew down either by machine or by hand. The other option is to use fusible hemming tape and press your seams down.

Talk about really easy or what...........?

What the heck do I do with that I hear you say.........?

I find it useful to tie bands of scrap fabric at intervals along the length of the pleated swag. This holds it in place while I start to hang it, especially if it's a long scarf swag.

Then finally hanging and dressing your scarf swag.

Hang your scarf swag over your Curtain rods rod or pole, then decide if you want both sides to be an even length. See diagram for details. Then take off the bands and start to tease the center of the swag down bit by bit. Until it's exactly as you want. scarf swag
There you have it. How to make scarf swags the easy way.....!
