Easy way to make make curtains, no prior knowledge required. Just
follow this simple how to make drapes article here. You will learn how to make your own curtains in no time at all.
The first step to making unlined curtains
Find an area to work in preferably your dining room table if not a clean hard floor will do (a little hard on the knees though). I will assume you have some basic sewing kit. Most sewers will have everything to make unlined curtains.
Fabric scissors to cut your drapery fabric with. A set of hand sewing needles and the right color sewing thread.
Next cutting your curtain fabric
You need to take your curtain drop and add 30cm (12 inches) for hem allowances (bottom hem and top turn over).
I am being a little generous with the curtain fabric. You will be able to work with a little less when you get more experience of making curtains.
Next your curtain side seams
You can either hand sew your curtain side seams or if proficient enough use a sewing machine (not my strong point). Next is to put the side seams on your fabric (see picture below). Turn over the sides of you fabric a couple of cm's, then turn over again. Then either pin your turnovers down or press down with an iron.
Then onto the bottom curtain hem
Turn over 4cm then turn over a further 10 cm. Again either pin down or press with an iron to keep in place. Then sew down as per your side seams. The only difference is that you start and finish your sewing 2 cm in from each end ( see picture below).
Miter your curtain corners
So what does miter your corners mean. Well the reason you left 2cm unsewn both ends of your hem was to "tuck in" the ends of your hems at an angle. You then hand sew down your miters.
Now to the top of your curtain
You now need to lay out your nearly finished curtain so you can measure for the finished length. Take your tape measure and measure from the bottom of your new hem up to the length of your new finished curtain. I find measuring up the side seams and putting in a pin to mark the finished length. Then fold over the extra fabric and pull taught. Next pin down or again press down with an iron. I told you making unlined curtains was easy.
The final step pencil pleat curtain tape
You need enough pencil pleat curtain header tape for each curtain. So the width of each curtain plus 10cm. Before the start
sewing you need to pull the 3 cords out of one end of the tape just enough to tie all the cords together.
Then smooth out the tape ready for sewing. make unlined curtains Lay your tape across the top of you curtain
pinning in place. The next step is to sew the top of the tape to the top of your curtain. Sew in 1/2 cm from
the the edge of the tape.
A little tip don't sew the tape right at the top of your curtain set it down
about 1/2 cm (1/4 inch). You can hand sew you tape on but it a long job. I recommend you machine sew when making
unlined curtains. Finally sew down the bottom edge of your curtain tape, again in 1/2 cm from the edge.
You've nearly learned how to make drapes, just a one more thing you need to whatch out for.
WARNING: when sewing down your curtain tape be very careful. don't sew over the cords running through the
tape. Otherwise when you come to gather the finished curtain the cords will not run through the tape. There
you have it a simple guide to make unlined curtains as long as you take it one easy step at a time. So you have
taken your first step on how to make window treatments keep on going.
