Plantation Blind Help

by Steve
(Fayetetville, NC)

We recently updated our windows to High Efficient triple pane windows with argon and Krypton gases.

We were informed that drilling into any part of the window frame would violate the manufacturers warranty.

Is there any way we can hang plantation blinds inside the window frame without drilling holes? Or will we be compelled to hang them outside the window and lose the rich stained wood finish of the trim work around the replacement windows?

Would shutters be an alternative, again mounting outside the window frames?

Hi Steve

The truth is that fixing your blinds to the window frames will not cause any damage. The window people are just covering themselves.

Your triple glazed units are a self contained item. These are the bits you don't want to damage. The frames are there simply to hold your glass units in place. You can drill the frames as long as you don't go near the glazed units.

I understand why the window people don't want people to drill. It's because of the "idiot factor" the ones that take no care and then blame someone else.

Having said all that it still does not help. Because even if you fit your blinds properly and don't cause any damage. If you glass units develop a fault in the future totally unrelated to fitting your blinds. Then the makers will not accept liability.

So what can you do if you don't want to take the risk. Fit outside as you suggested. I know it's not what you really want. So fix to the frames with care and hope nothing ever goes wrong with your window and get the look you want. Or fix outside and keep the guarantee intact.

Sorry to not be of more help.

Best regards

Lee

I live in a condo and wanted to affix blinds to the inside of the window.

I called our building engineer first to see if I could do it. What he told me was we cannot do that, due to the fact that it will negate the warranty on the windows.

I would affix them to the ceiling, but not the window. If you live in a condo and ever sell your place and move out, you may incur some legal ramifications, and for me, it's not worth it!

Hi

If you own your building then you can do as you please and take a chance. I agree though that when it's part of a complex or rented it is a different story.

Often the people you ask for permission just don't want the hassle. It's so much easier for them to just say no.

I have fitted all kinds of blinds to conservatories. They are all double glazed units mounted in plastic uPVC frames. There is nothing but the frames to fix to.

The conservatory manufacturers will tell you the same, you can't fix to the frames. But if you order blinds from them they will happily come out and fit them exactly where they said you can not.

P.S. Thanks for your comment, it's a bit of a minefield this new window subject. Anyone else got any ideas. Then please leave a comment.
