Please help me choose the right type of curtain for odd length window

by Kristi
(Indiana)

Hello, my name is Kristi. I want to put room darkening shades in my son's bedroom. There is one window on top of another, trimmed as one large window. The window on top is 40" long and 40" wide. (Add 2" on top for trim.) Then there is wood between the windows that is 11" long.

Then the lower window is 70" long and 40" wide. (add 2" on bottom for trim.) Again this is all trimmed as one window. I don't want to hang 2 separate curtains, I think that would cut the window and make it look funny. Can't find any curtains long enough to cover the entire unit. Any suggestions?? Thanks!!

Hi Kristi

Even if could find curtains long enough. you would have problems opening and closing them. Even if you put them on a corded traverse rod the cords would probably not be long enough to reach.

You may not like this idea but it is the most practical I can think of. Fit vertical blinds. They can be made to fit this size window no problem. You can get them in blackout fabric to block the light.

Being black out fabric does not mean they will be black in color. You can get them in almost any color these days. Because they are made to fit the window exactly the controls can be made to the right length for you to reach as well.

To finish off the window you could add a simple scarf swag. Fit a decorative curtain rod over the top window. Then drape a scarf over the top and down the sides. The picture below is to just give you an idea of the kind of swag I'm talking about.

I hope the idea appeals to you.

Best regards

Lee
