shortening curtains

by heather

Hi,

I have 2 panels with a pocket for the curtain rod. The curtains go down to the floor and end up in a a little pile on the floor. I'd like some advice on the best way to shorten them since I'd like them to fall above the baseboard heater. Is there a standard length below the window sill that panels should fall?
I do have a sewing machine, but would like some advice on whether I should shorten them from the bottom or from the top. Thanks!

Heather

Hi Heather

The simple answer is that there is no right length for your curtains it's a personal choice.

I think long always look better than short. So to your question about shortening your curtains. If they are unlined then shorten from the bottom. It's a lot simpler to create a new bottom hem than a new top pocket for your rod.

Having said that if your curtains are lined then it's better to alter from ther top and fold over and create a new top pocket rather than rehem curtains and lining.

Hope that helps

Best regards

Lee
