Upholstery Fabric

by Elaine
(South Africa)

Why should upholstery fabric be avoided for curtains?

Hi Elaine

Very good question wish more people would ask before they make curtains out of upholstery fabric.

This kind of fabric is mostly but not always heavier . With a more dense weave to make it more able to stand up to the wear and tear it will receive. It is in most countries treated with a chemical to make it fire retardant.

Both of these things make it too stiff to hang and drape well. It often hangs like a piece of cardboard.

Some but few upholstery fabrics can be used for curtains. They are the generally lighter fabrics. Even though you still need to get it before it has been treated with the fire protector coating.

Best regards

Lee
