What length do a make a valance for windows?

by Ruth's Sew-N-Sew
(McKinney,TX)

I am doing window treatments for windows that are about 15ft high. There are 2 sets of windows separated by wall. The top window is 5'10" and bottom ones are 6'10". I've done panels that will stay open and I'm doing a valance but not sure what length to make it. Could you advise. Thank you!

Hi Ruth

The general rule would be for the valance to be a 6th of the length of the curtains. This would make your valance 30 inches deep, too deep in my opinion.

I would have thought around 25 inches deep. This is assuming it will not encroach to much over the window.

I had a job recently where I had put up a top board. Ready to come back on the next trip and fix a top treatment. My customer and myself could like you not agree on the right length to go for. So I stapled up a piece of paper at different lengths. You don't need to have a wide piece of paper. It's where it hangs to thats important. I found physically seeing the different lengths gave me the information i needed.

I hope this helps you with your little problem

Best Regards

Lee
