What to do with box windows
Hi Lee, My name is Gloria. I have windows that don't have a frame. They look like openings in the walls. I call them box windows ,am not sure if this is the correct name. I want to hang a valance and drapes. I can't figure out what kind of rod to use. Can you help?
Hi Gloria
you have what is called a recessed window. Simply it is set back into the wall.
You will need a curtain rod to hold the curtains and another for your valance. I have put links to ebay for the kind of stuff you need just below.
Traverse curtain rod
valance rod
As to fitting a curtain rod over your window. you will need some tools. A drill to make some holes, then some wall plugs to put in the holes. Then some screws to fix the brackets to the wall.
I start by fixing the rod brackets around 5 inches over the top of the window. This means your valance will not sit too deep over your window when fitted.
The kind of screws and wall plugs you need will depend on the kind of walls you have. Drywall or solid brick or other. If your not sure take some advice then get the right fixings. Someone in your local hardware store should be able sort you out with the right things you need.
If all this seems too much then ask a local handyman to help. They will have the tools and the right fixings already.
I have put links here to a couple of pages that will help with measuring and fitting.
