curtain rod
by karen
(brighton mi)
Hanging curtains on two separate windows and want each one to pull over to left and the other window want to pull to the right.
Each window has a rod. But, how do I go about hiding the hardware that holds the rod when curtain is pulled over and leaving either the right or left side open?
Hi Karen
you will need either a valance or a pelmet or cornice as you call then in the states.
If your interested in making a pelmet then take a look at this article. Make Pelmets
If you want to hang a valance then you will need a valance rod so take a look at here Valance Rods
If you need corded rods to open and close your curtains then take a look at these. Traverse Rods
Hope this helps

Where do I hang a curtain rod - over casing or at ceiling?
by Kelly
(Canada)
I have a 93" wide window in my Living Room. I bought grommet style curtains that are 8ft long. The wall the window is on is 8ft, in a room that has vaulted ceilings.
My questions is - do I put the rod all the way to the ceiling so the curtains fit without pooling, or do I put the rod closer to the casing and hem them?
My concern with the "to the ceiling" approach is the empty space when the curtains are open during the day. Would this look strange? Which would look better?
Hi Kelly
You should fit your curtains so the top of your curtains sit approximatley half way between the top of your window and the ceiling.
So you would need to make a new hem. It would look odd to have your curtains right up to the ceiling in my opinion. The only time you would do this is if the gap left you will no choice.
You can pin and resew your hems or if you are not great at sewing then use fusible web tape. The kind of stuff you use to rehem a dress or trousers. It works well on mosT curtains.

Where do I install a curtain rod (for valance) for a window that has a transom window above it?
by Kate
(Gainesville, GA)
I need the curtain rod in between the transom window and the regular window.
I have two other windows in this room that do not have transom windows and I was going to follow the 2 inches out and 4 inches up but if I do that on the window with the transom, I may be covering a good bit of it.
Hi kate
Difficult to give you an exact answer without seeing the windows in question.
You obviously need to set the valance rods several inches over the windows without the transoms. I would try and keep the valance on the transom window at the same height.
Obviously from what you say it is going to sit at a different level. I think you have to make a judgment call.
1. Will it look better if you set the valance at the bottom of the transom window. Ignoring the level on the 2 other windows.
2. Or set it at the same level and have it covering part of the transom window. This would be my preferred solution.
There is no absolute on how high or low over a window a valance has to sit. I would play around with the measurements a little up and down. also the depth of the valances could be altered so suit.
At the end of the day it all boils down to what you think looks best. After all your the one who has to live with it.
Sorry I could not give you a more exact answer.

What kind of curtain rod do I have to use?
by Lisa
(NJ)
How do I hang a pinch pleat drape with shear rod pocket panels on same rod? What kind of rod do I have to use?
Hi Lisa
The simple answer is you cannot hang both on the same rod. They need to be on separate rods. What you need is a double rod, one for the rod pocket panels and one for the pinch pleat curtains.
To see what these double rods look like click on the link below.

by denis venne
(toronto, ontario, canada)
Hi,I made some curtains for my sister, for her living and dining room. The top will be finish with pleats from the cord tape.
I'm using a decorative curtain rod with decorative round hooks. Would you be able to tell me where should i put the rod from the window frame.I will have the rod, the round hooks, and the curtains hanging from those round hooks.
If you have a chance can you please e-mail me the information or other ideals that could help me.
Thank You
Denis
Hi Denis
No problem giving you the answer it is very simple.
As a rough rule of thumb you need to fix your curtain rod about 6 inches over your window. The rod should also come past the window each side about 6 inches.
Don't fret if you don't have enough room on all sides. It's only a general rule.
I find people who can make curtains seem to start with that then worry about fitting them after. Unfortunately this often leads to problems with sizes. Either not wide enough or too short or long.
It is always worth fitting your curtain hardware first. Then measuring how big the curtains need to be. I Have a page on this subject if it interests you for any future projects.
How to measure for curtains.
You may want to have a quick look at this page as well.
How to hang curtains
Good luck with hanging the new curtains.
